Works underway in Domain

piha DomainRollers in the Domain signal the upgrading of the road through the Domain. Complaints about dust and wheelies have resulted in the road being widened, sealed and the level raised. Speed humps will be installed.

The entrance to the Domain is being widened to allow buses to enter, the previous entrance being on too tight an angle to allow large vehicles.

The Local Parks West team surveyed community views on its plans but got very few replies. Original plans to put a concrete path from the bridge to the road have been shelved because of opposition, and a plan to deter wheelies and formalise parking by putting earth bunds at right-angles to the road have been shelved for the same reason.

The Domain has undergone significant development over the years. Early photos show that the area adjoining the lagoon was a wetland of flax, reeds and other wetland plants. The Domain area is part of a floodplain, designed to absorb and then slowly release water from high tides, especially those that coincide with storm events that send large volumes of water down the Piha Stream.
