Around lunchtime today Thursday 9 January a fisherman wearing a lifejacket was seen to fall into the water near The Gap, at the south end of Piha beach. Despite searching by the surf club’s IRB and the Police helicopter the person was not retrieved. The beach was being patrolled but the incident occured outside the patrol area.
This is the second drowning at Piha since the beginning of the summer season. In November, a woman drowned at the south end of Piha beach.
