New toilet block planned for Domain

Local Parks West is planning a completely new toilet block to serve patrons of the Piha Domain and visitors to Piha. The existing block, contained in a Lockwood building, is showing its age, and campers must share their facilities with the public.

The original plan was to refurbish the interior, providing separate facilities for the public facing the road, and separate showers and toilets for campers.

This plan was to cost $120,000 which was within the budget.

During the consultation by parks on 1 October, Parks put this plan before the Piha community, along with two additional options:

  1. More extensive refurbishment to a total budget of $350,000.
  2. Completely new building, probably concrete slab like Mid-beach toilets, at a cost of $500,000.

Neither of these two is completely budgetted, and to carry these out, Parks would have to reallocate budgets within the western sector.  Parks would also like to shift the underground the tanks.

At the October consultation, only four comments were received on the various proposals, and all preferred a total rebuild.

The proposal is going to the Waitakere Ranges Local Board at its 14 December meeting as the Domain is classified as a Local Park. If this gets its support, Parks says it will consult, design and consent within the 2011/12 year with a view to building in July/August 2012.
