Basketball half court for Piha Domain

Posted by SCe Comments Off on Basketball half court for Piha Domain

The Piha Kidz Charitable Trust has won support from the Waitakere Ranges Local Board for a new  basketball  half-court on the Piha Domain and the Board has also put in funding. The existing basketball court between the tennis courts and bowling green will need to be moved to make way for the new sports facility being built at some time in the future for the tennis and bowling clubs.

Now Parks is consulting on its preferred location, on current Domain open space, next to the playground. The consultation only proposes one location. See here Piha Domain Basketball Half Court – Communication Flyer FINAL (1)

This raises a number of questions:

  • What will the half court look like and what impact will it have on the visual amenity and landscape of the Domain?
  • Can it be co-located with the Tennis Court volley board which like the existing basketball half court will need to be shifted for the new joint tennis club/bowling club building
  • Is it consistent with the provisions of the Piha Reserves Management Plan which seeks to accomodate recreation, but also the natural values of the western Domain area?
  • Has it been considered alongside the Piha Design Guidelines?
  • Do we want to keep the open space of the west side of the Domain facing the lagoon as informal open space, and avoid structured recreation equipment/amenities?
  • Is two weeks enough to canvas community views?

The attached consultation form provides an address for people to express their views.
